Captain Jan Anderson

Captain Jan Anderson is a retired airline Captain with nearly four decades of experience in commercial aviation. After graduating from the University of Minnesota, she began her career with Mesaba Airlines, where she was part of the airline’s first all-female flight crew in 1986. In 1988, Jan joined American Airlines, launching a 35-plus-year career that she describes as both challenging and rewarding.

During her time at American, Jan flew the MD-80, 757, 767, and 777 as a First Officer before upgrading to Captain on the 737 and later the 777. She retired from American Airlines in April 2025, proud of the career she built and the people she flew alongside.

Much of Jan’s impact came outside the flight deck. For more than 25 years, she served on American Airlines’ pilot recruitment team, helping interview, hire, and mentor the next generation of aviators. She also worked closely with aspiring pilots through the American Airlines Cadet Program, offering guidance and support during the early stages of their careers.

Jan has long been involved in aviation advocacy and community building. She served as Vice President of the National Gay Pilots Association (NGPA), supporting the global LGBTQ+ aviation community, and has been an active member of both NGPA and Women in Aviation International since 1998. For more than two decades, Jan has been a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion in aviation, mentoring pilots and working toward an industry where everyone feels welcome.

Jan lives in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with her wife of 39 years, Koré. When she’s not mentoring or supporting aviation organizations, Jan enjoys golfing, skiing, and relaxing at their cabin on the lake.
